Investigations launched into police killing of university student in Kibera
The Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched an investigation into the shooting of Carilton David Maina, a university student, by the police in Kibera, Nairobi.
Maina, 23, a student at Leeds University, was shot dead on Sunday morning by the police who claim he was among a group of thugs that was terrorising residents of Line Saba.
But the residents have refuted the police account, saying it was a classic case of extra-judicial killing.
PUBLIC OUTRAGE
A certain Collins Onyango, who narrated the incident on his Facebook page, said Maina was shot dead while returning home from watching a football match from a movie shop.
But following public outrage over the circumstances under which Maina was killed IPOA has now launched investigations into the incident.
In a statement released on Wednesday, IPOA said it will recommend criminal or disciplinary proceedings against any officers proven to have shot the university student.
FATAL SHOOTING
“The authority on its own motion has immediately launched independent investigations to unravel the circumstances that led to the fatal shooting,” IPOA said in the statement.
Meanwhile, the National Police Service has welcomed the decision and urged IPOA to expedite investigations.
“We further wish to assure the public that the service, just like in similar instances in the past, will enforce the outcome of the investigation that IPOA will recommend,” the National Police Service tweeted.
