I will turn Uhuru Park into a matatu terminus – Sonko

Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko has promised to turn the iconic Uhuru Park into a matatu terminus if elected Nairobi governor in the forthcoming election.

Speaking in a television interview on Tuesday morning, the flambouyant senator said the park will be turned into a drop-off zone for public transport vehicles.

This is his solution to end the congestion in the central business district by matatus that have allocated themselves parking areas at non-designated spots.

Sonko had arrived late for the interview on KTN Morning Express show by 20 minutes and explained he had been held up by the heavy traffic.

Probed on what he will do to ease congestion in the city centre if elected Nairobi governor in 2017,  he straight away said he will transform Uhuru Park into a drop-off zone for matatus from Eastlands.

PROPOSED PLAN

In his proposed plan, matatus from Eastlands will not be allowed to access the city centre but will instead drop-off passengers in Uhuru Park and return.

Uhuru Park has survived previous efforts for a change of use, including a proposal by former President Daniel arap Moi government to turn it over to private ownership. Environmentalist and nobel peace price winner the late Wangari Maathai resisted the proposal to the chagrin of the regime.

In the morning interview, Sonko said he will “soon” release a documentary on all corrupt deals by the Nairobi city county. He claimed to have a “pick-up full of documents” that back up his corruption claims against Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero.

Sonko made the declaration after getting visibly frustrated at the “lack of time” to highlight the alleged corrupt activities of Governor Kidero.

“I’m frustrated that we don’t always have time to highlight the corruption cartels in the county. Like now I have a pick-up full of documents confirming what I’m telling you. I will do a documentary showing all this, which I will distribute to you guys (media) to tell Kenyans,” said Sonko.

Senator Sonko has declared interest to unseat Governor Evans Kidero in the forthcoming general election. He has numerously accused the incumbent of theft of public property and even murder.
