Head teacher pins poor KCSE results by boy child on betting

A secondary school principal in Kakamega County is blaming betting for the drop in the number of boys occupying top positions in KCSE results.

Booker Academy Principal John Mark Wandera said many boys are engaging in betting and ignoring academics.

Mr Wandera also cited high levels of drug abuse and indiscipline among boys as compared to girls.

“Boys in high schools have become so indisciplined and teachers are shifting their attention to the girls who listen to and obey them,” said Mr Wandera.

The overall results, however, show more boys than girls will qualify for university, indicating that perhaps the large pool of best performers are still boys.

Betting has also been found to affect both boys and girls.

Booker Academy registered a mean score of 7.8 in the KCSE exam.

Mr Wandera said 2017 was the worst year in the history of the Mumias Sugar Company-sponsored school as teachers went for five months without salary.

“I want to thank the teachers for volunteering to work when the company was experiencing hard economic times,” he added.
