The Government says it needs at least Sh8 billion to repair roads that have been damaged by ongoing heavy rains and floods.

Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia says the funds are required for immediate repairs of the roads across the country.

“Now that the rains have subsided, we are going round the country to assess the roads,” Macharia said while pointing out that Nairobi roads are particularly in urgent need for repairs.

“In the case of Nairobi, we are focusing on CBD and Industrial Area and that will be at a total cost of Sh4.1 billion,” he said.

The CS added that already, road construction works have started in Nairobi.

Mr Macharia hinted that the government might just work on all the roads in the capital city including those under the county jurisdiction.

SHODDY WORK

“We shall discuss which roads belong to which government once we have completed repairs in the city,” he said.

The CS was addressing the media after the launch of the construction of the Kandisi Bridge in Kajiado County.

He, however, promised that construction works on Magadi road, Kajiado County would begin soon.

“We are already engaging on negotiations to make sure the contractor starts the work of dual carriage on Magadi road from Bomas to Kona Baridi,” he said.

Macharia warned of stern action on constructors found guilty of doing shoddy work.

“We are trying to do all we can to ensure that if constructors do shoddy work, they are held accountable,” he said.
