Governor Obado released on bail after two nights in cell

November 16th, 2018 1 min read

Migori Governor Okoth Obado was on Friday released on a Sh 500,000 bond or Sh 200,000 cash bail.

Magistrate Joyce Gondani ruled that prosecution had failed to establish why the governor should continue being held in custody.

Governor Obado was arrested Wednesday after Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) detectives raided his homes and allegedly found eight guns.

He has spent the last two days under police custody.

The magistrate, in her bail ruling, said the governor is not a flight risk and not likely to tamper with witnesses or investigations.

She also pointed out that no witnesses have been identified yet.

Prosecution through state lawyer Catherine Mwaniki requested the court to have the governor report to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations every Friday.

However, the defense argued that the request is unconstitutional.
