Garissa police boss opts for retirement for fear of Al-Shabaab militants

A newly posted Garissa police boss has sought for early retirement for fear of being a high value target for Al-Shabaab militants.

Mr Boniface Mwaniki, the former head of the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU), had recently been posted to Garissa as the County Criminal Investigations Officer.

He has written to the Director of Criminal Investigations Ndegwa Muhoro seeking early retirement.

Sources say Mr Muhoro has approved the request.

Mr Mwaniki sought early retirement because he feared that as the former head of ATPU,  he would be a trophy target for the Al-Shabaab militants in Garissa.

The town has lately grown into a hot spot for attacks by the Al-Qaeda linked extremists.

In April, four Al-Shabaab terrorists killed 147 students and injured 79 others an attack at the Garissa University College.

This led to the suspension of seven high ranking police officers after it emerged that they had not acted on intelligence that warned of an impending attack.

The Islamist militants also in April killed a chief in Mandera County, hours after they pulled him out of a bus and took him to Somalia.
