Fuel prices go up as road maintenance levy rises

The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) on Thursday announced new fuel prices to take effect starting mid-night.

In Nairobi the price of Super Petrol increased by Sh 6.76 to Sh 92.93 per litre while Diesel increased by Sh 9.53 to Sh 83.24 per litre.

Kerosene which is still used in houses for cooking and lighting increased by Sh 3.41 to Sh 61.45 per litre.

In this month’s review, ERC has factored Sh 6 per litre in additional Road Maintenance Levy for both super petrol and diesel in line with the Road Maintenance Levy Fund (Imposition of Levy) (Amendment) Order, 2016.

ROAD MAINTENANCE

Treasury recently raised the road maintenance levy from Sh12 per litre of diesel or petrol to Sh18 in the budget for the new financial year.

Other factors also led to the increase as ERC stated, “The average landed cost of imported Super Petrol increased by 3.03% from US$ 490.18 per ton in May 2016 to US$ 505.02 per ton in June 2016. Diesel increased by 11.15% from US$ 409.02 per ton to US$ 454.63 per ton and Kerosene increased by 2.53% from US$ 468.28 per ton to US$ 480.12 per ton.”

In last month’s review, the regulator increased fuel pump prices for the second month in a row.
