‘Fortune tellers’ face jail terms for attempting to defraud woman of Sh100,000

Two women are facing jail terms after pleading guilty to attempting to defraud a woman Sh100,000, while pretending to be fortune tellers.

Ms Winnie Njoki Waithera and Ms Natalia Gakii Njagi were seized by police as they tried to con one Ms Alice Muthoni Muchiri of the money claiming they were prophets, with ability to end misfortunes through prayers.

They pleaded to the offence before Embu Senior Resident Magistrate Samuel Mutai but the prosecution appealed for more time to table all the facts before they are sentenced.

It is alleged that the two, together with others still at large, had approached Ms Muchiri on July 14, 2017 and told her that she had been bewitched and needed special prayers.

‘BEWITCHED’

“They told her that she and her husband had been bewitched and were under a spell, and that they were in a position to reverse the problems.

“They said they would reverse the effects of the said witchcraft and bring them prosperity. They did this for gains or rewards pretending that they were prophets,” read the charge sheet.

The said offence is alleged to have been committed along Kenyatta avenue, Embu town.

The two women also faced a second charge of attempting to obtain money from Ms Muchiri by false pretence at Kenya Women Finance Trust.

Mr Mutai ordered that the women be held at Embu Police Station and be presented for case ruling on Friday.
