Former PS told to drop designer-suits advisers, helicopters to win Governor’s seat

A former Foreign Affairs Permanent Secretary eyeing the Laikipia county gubernatorial seat was over the weekend told by his constituents to ‘discard helicopters and vehicles and walk on foot to where voters are’ if he is to stand a chance of winning the seat.

Mr Thuita Mwangi was told of the conditions at a meeting with representatives from the business sector, social and faith-based groups in Nyahururu town.

In the no-holds-barred meeting, the former PS was told to drop designer-suits advisers surrounding him because they will not bring him votes.

He was further told to ‘stop sending emissaries and go to the people by himself’ if he hopes to clinch the seat next year.

“Come walking and spend the day greeting people at the market and tell them what you will do for them if elected. Don’t send emissaries to us,” Jane Wambui from the vegetable retail market told him.

The groups said they admire his resume of 26 years in government service under three presidents, but urged him to only “promise what he knows he will deliver.”

Mr Mwangi was charged with two others in relation to the Tokyo embassy scam. They were charged with abuse of office in procuring the embassy and ambassador’s residence in Tokyo at a price of Sh1.4 billion, and for failing to involve the ministerial tender committee in approving the purchase.

The case flopped after prosecution failed to prove a case against them.
