Flaunt those travel documents at your risk, experts warn

If you thought sharing photos of your boarding pass on Instagram is fancy, then you might have to think again.

Security experts have warned that the information represented on the pass using the bar code can be used to jeopardize a traveler if it lands on the wrong hands.

Sian John, Chief Security Strategist Europe Middle East and Africa for Symantec told Daily Mail that the passes should be shredded after use.

“Private details, such as the email, home address and phone number linked to your airline account could be exposed and could even give a cybercriminal the ability to change your travel plans,” said Ms John.

TRAVELLING ABROAD

She added that an update on social media that you have travelled accompanied by a photo of the boarding pass could also invite robbers to your home.

“Making sure you switch your social media privacy settings to only share updates with your trusted network is a good place to start.

“However, be conscious of which network you may be sharing to, and remember that once on the internet, content can be re-shared thousands of times – even by this ‘trusted network’,” she said.

Kenyan socialites, musicians and television personalities are particularly notorious for flaunting their travel documents online whenever they are travelling abroad.
