Five more guns to be handed over at Sonko’s ceremony
More youths are set to surrender their guns in a ceremony being organised by the police and Senator Sonko.
The youths have said they are willing to surrender more than five firearms of different types, said County Police Commandant Benson Kibui.
One of the youths who failed to surrender an AK47 he confessed to have hidden at a farm in Kiambu will be among those expected to surrender the weapons.
“I had earlier issued a warrant of arrest for the man because he failed to hand in the rifle during the ultimatum he had been given by the police,” Mr Kibui said, “but it turned out that he has influenced other men who are willing to hand over the guns they have”
Sonko — real name Gidion Mbuvi — and the police offered a deal in October to influence the youth in Dandora and neighbouring areas to surrender their guns to the police.
In the arrangement, Sonko promised to pay Sh50,000 for every gun surrendered to the police, and help those who surrender the guns to start a business that will help them gain financial freedom.
The police, on the other hand, were to give amnesty to anyone who surrendered their weapons during a specified period of time.
On October 20, the man referred to by Mr Kibui had surrendered two pistols to the police and promised to hand in the AK47 he confessed was hidden in Kiambu.
A gathering at the Kinyago Police Station in Dandora witnessed the handing in of the two pistols, had allegedly been used to kill a rival group member.
The two rivalling youth groups were clashing over who should take control of the taxation of vehicles that dump at the Dandora garbage site.
During the clash, two days before the handing over of the guns, one man died. Sonko and the police had to step in to quell the feud between the groups.
They held a meeting which attracted members of the two youth groups and senior police officers from Buruburu and Dandora Divisions where the youth agreed to surrender their guns.
Police chief, Benson Kibui said the measure was aiming at influencing the youth to surrender guns voluntarily.
