Elite squad policeman arrested over Sh14m Barclays Bank ATM robbery


Detectives have arrested a police officer attached to an elite unit in connection to the robbery of Sh14 million from three Barclays Bank ATM machines.

Mr George Gachungu Njoroge, a police officer attached to the Rapid Deployment Unit (RDU) in Isiolo, is believed to be a key source who will assist in the investigations.

Mr Gachungu was arrested by detectives from the Economic Crimes Unit for the offence of conspiracy to commit a felony.

“In diverse dates between April 15 and 20, he conspired with others to commit the said offence at Barclays ATM point based at Kenya Cinema occasioning to a financial loss to Barclays bank of Kenya,” read a police report filed at Kamukunji police station.

Nairobi News has also established that detectives are tracing the source of a video which shows a person passing his hand through on a huge heap of Sh1,000 notes that are spread on a bed.

Police believe the video is linked to the Barclays Bank robbery.

A sleuth privy to the investigations said that they are following possible leads that would assist them in arresting the person behind the clip.

“I can assure you that the person will be arrested, he can run but he will never hide,” said the officer who spoke in confidence.
