Driver denies ferrying terrorists to Westgate
A man has denied reports in a local daily which suggested the vehicle he was driving ferried terrorists to the Westgate shopping mall.
Mr Muimi Kiteme told the court he was supplying vegetables at a café in the mall.
“I never carried any terrorists, my car had vegetables,” said the witness, adding that the vehicle was towed away from the precincts of the shopping mall after two weeks.
He was responding to cross examination by defence lawyer Mbugua Muriithi.
The driver narrated to court how about four or five terrorists jumped out of a saloon car in a split second and started shooting indiscriminately during an attack.
He told the court he was supplying vegetables at a café in the mall and as the gate was being opened for him a grey saloon car zoomed past his before making a quick turn.
“I stopped my car, before the loader who was with me could finish talking, the shooting begun,” said Mr Kiteme.
The witness added “a bullet missed my head and all I could hear was shattering of glass”.
Mr Kiteme identified the car he was driving which had bullet holes after he was shown some pictures by the prosecution.
He said a white scarf the attacker had adorned fell down and as he (attacker) was picking it up he managed to get out of his vehicle and hid under it.
The witness told the court that he sought refuge at a nearby house when the attackers had gained entrance into the mall.
A security guard Sylvester Mutungu and a cashier with Barclays bank Queensway branch Ms Grace Wamoru also testified.
Mr Adan Abdikadir, Mohamed Abdi, Liban Abdullah and Hussein Hassan allegedly on September 21 last year jointly with others not before court carried out a terrorist attack at Westgate Shopping mall.
Other charges facing some of the accused include giving support to terrorist group and habouring of persons committing a terrorist acts.
