Dandora dumpsite to be converted into processing area

The government of Japan has pledged to assist Nairobi City in converting the Dandora dumpsite into a fully-fledged processing area.

The plan, which was announced during a meeting between Japan Ambassador to Kenya H.E Toshitsugu Uesawa and Nairobi City County Governor Dr Evans Kidero, is set to transform the city into a world-class city through the introduction of the Fukuoka method of waste disposal management.

Through the technology, which is already in use countries such as Denmark and Malaysia, a final disposal are will be set up in Ruai.

According to Dr Kidero the technology to be used will not pose danger to aeroplanes and bird strikes will be completely minimized.

GARBAGE CRISIS

“This technology will also put in place measures to curb toxic gas emission and create massive employment for youth in Dandora and Ruai areas. Nairobi City has never had a Masterplan in place but with assistance from JICA an ambitious Master Plan was handed over to me in 2014,” Dr Kidero said.

On his part, Ambassador Uesawa lauded the growing relationship between Nairobi City County Government and Japan.

The development will come as a huge relief for county bosses in the wake of a looming garbage crisis following the closure of Dandora dumpsite.

Last week, the situation was further aggravated by the downing of tools by City Hall contractors working at the dumpsite over four-month arrears the county owes them.
