Cord replaces its majority whip in Nairobi county assembly

The Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (Cord) has replaced Karen MCA David Mberia with the Parklands Ward MCA Jaffer Kassam as the county assembly majority chief whip.

A letter seen by Nairobi News that was written by ODM executive director Oduor Ong’wen and dated October 31, 2016 states that Mr Kassam is the new majority whip.

“The party has received recommendation from its leadership in the Nairobi county assembly regarding the changes therein to make its leadership responsive and effective.

“It has recommended that you Hon. Jaffer Kassam assume with immediate effect the position of the majority whip,” the letter reads.

Speaking to journalists on Tuesday, Mr Kassam welcomed the decision and accepted the position.

He vowed to ensure that no member of Cord will go against the coalition’s interests under his watch.

“I will whip these members if they do not follow what the coalition recommends. You will see changes as we are going the same direction from now on,” said Mr Kassam.

However speaking on Nairobi News separately, Mr Mberia laughed off the appointment saying the it is members who elect their own leadership in the assembly.

Mr Mberia said he had not received any letter telling him that he is no longer the chief whip.

“That is all nonsense. I am irreplaceable and let anyone dare say he has taken over my office and my roles,” he said.
