Cord names five-member team for IEBC talks

The Opposition coalition has released the names of its negotiating team for proposed talks on reforming the electoral commission.

Cord nominated two Senators and three Members of Parliament to the team expected to initiate talks on the impasse over the composition of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

The team includes Siaya Senator James Orengo, Machakos Senator Johnston Muthama, Tongaren MP Eseli Simiyu, Mombasa County Women Representative Mishi Mboko and  Junet Mohammed, Suna East MP.

Earlier Balambala MP Abdikadir Aden had been named to the team but Mr Mohammed was picked to replace him.

The team was announced in a statement sent to journalists on Thursday afternoon.

The coalition also named two joint secretaries who will facilitate the talks.

They are Paul Mwangi and Grace Katasi.

Cord leader Raila Odinga had on Wednesday at the Madaraka Day rally warned that his supporters would be back in the streets next week if nothing comes out of the proposed talks.

President Uhuru Kenyatta has insisted that any discussions on the IEBC or any other constitutional body must be done within the confines of the law.

A statement from State House on Wednesday said the President supports the initiative of the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee of the National Assembly which would soon invite Kenyans to present their views and recommendations on the IEBC and other electoral reform issues during sittings it plans to hold across the country.
