Civil servant arrested over terror scare at Garden City mall

A civil servant at the Foreign Affairs Ministry is among suspects being held by police over a terror scare at Garden City shopping mall in Nairobi.

The 46-year-old man and his two accomplices were taken in for questioning by Anti-Terrorism Police Unit detectives, following the 3pm Tuesday scare.

The others aged 52 and 55 years were described by police as “casual labourers.”

They were stopped at the main gate of the city’s newest and largest mall and searched. A device that looked like an improvised explosive was found on one of them.

The Toyota Vista car they had travelled in was also detained by the police.

Inspector-General of Police Joseph Boinnet said: “The device at the Garden City mall was an amateurish collection of phone wires strapped together to like an explosive device.”

Kenya Police spokesman Charles Owino said the suspects’ motive was not immediately established.

“The object did not contain any explosive,” Mr Owino added.
