City MP ‘ordered’ bodyguard to shoot tycoon

A city tycoon on Monday claimed in court that Dagoreti North MP Simba Arati ordered his bodyguard to shoot him last year during a confrontation at a disputed piece of land in Lavington, Nairobi.

The dispute was, however, settled after the National Land Commission ruled that the plot legally belonged to the tycoon, Mr Ashok Shah.

“Under instructions from the MP, his bodyguard moved forward, held my hand and trained his gun on me. I pushed him, stepped back and drew my gun to remind Mr Arati that I was also a licensed gun holder and I would not hesitate to use it in self-defence,” Mr Shah told the court.

He said Mr Arati had sent people to invade the land, owned by his company, Summermount Holdings, claiming it was grabbed.

“Three times the MP sent goons to invade our land and destroy our property. Three times I reported the matter at Muthangari Police Station and when they were reluctant to take action, I wrote to the parliamentary Disciplinary Committee complaining that the MP was misusing his powers,” Mr Shah said.

He was testifying in a case in which six men are accused of stealing his property valued at Sh1.5 million.

The hearing continues.
