City matatus to fete the best in ‘Nganya’ awards

Matatus in Nairobi will this Saturday fete the best among their ranks in the ‘Nganya Awards’ to be held at KICC.

The awards seek to shed off the unruly behavior associated with public service vehicles.

The awards will recognize the best Sacco, the best driver, the best conductor, most compliant route and the most compliant vehicle among other fields.

According to the event organiser Dennis Bikambo of Grip Ventures, the awards are meant to promote road safety.

“The objective is to celebrate the unique Kenyan matatu culture,” added Mr Bikambo.

Nairobi matatus are typical for their obscene graffiti, loud music and flouting of traffic rules.

The sector has lately been feeling the heat following a series of fatal accidents attributed to driver error and recklessness.

Last month, 12 people died when a train rammed an UmoInner matatu at the Mutindwa rail crossing. The driver is facing manslaughter charges.

On Tuesday, a bus lost control at the Githurai roundabout killing four pedestrians.
