Churchill rants at younger comedians at Othuol’s burial
Popular comedian Daniel Ndambuki alias Churchill has advised young comedians to stop engaging in wild gossip on social media and instead come up with ways to monetise their content.
Ndambuki, who owns and hosts the weekly Churchill Show on NTV, spoke on Saturday in Siaya county during the burial of fallen comedian Ben Maurice Onyango alias Othuol Othuol.
The 31-year-old died at the Kenyatta National Hospital after battling brain tumor, tuberculosis and alcoholism.
“Being a brand requires discipline and consistency. It’s just like a school, you might go to Alliance (High School) but that does not mean that you will get an A (grade), not everybody will pass, he said.
“My advice to comedians and entertainers is to take advantage of social media and stop calling your fans family. Don’t wake up telling them what you are eating, where you are going and everything you are doing. Stop it,” a visibly angry Ndambuki warned.
He suggested that Othuol’s death could have been avoided and urged the younger comics to put in the work to make it in the tough industry.
During his rant, he at one time even paused and mentioned Zeddy Zainab, who at one time blamed frustrations by his Churchill Show team for the growing number of comedians who had dived into depression.
“Your family is your mother, father and your kids. Stop frustrating them. Fans follow you because you are funny, the moment you stop being funny they stop being your fans. I still wake up at 4am every day and it is not easy. I do not want to come to another function like this. I want to see millionaires in you,” the radio presenter said.
Othuol is the fifth Kenyan comedian to pass away in recent times.
The others are Emmanuel Makori alias Ayieya Poa Poa, Benson Wanjau aka Mzee Ojwang, DJ Nakumatt, and Joseph Musyoki alias Kasee.
