Child, nanny, killed in freak road accident

A woman and a child were on Wednesday night killed after being knocked down by a speeding truck in a grisly road accident at Maili Nne in Eldoret town.

The child died on the spot while the woman, a nanny, died while undergoing treatment at the Moi Teaching and Referral hospital.

Witnesses said that the driver of the truck, which was ferrying goods on Eldoret-Uganda highway, seemed to have lost control due to breaks failure when it hit the two who were crossing the road.

“The truck had all the headlights on and the driver was hooting so much. So when he reached at the center, the two were already halfway crossing the road and that is when they were hit by the speeding truck,” said Peter Nyongesa, a boda boda rider.

The driver, Mukhozi Kilonji, attempted to flee from the scene but was cornered by boda boda riders and an angry crowd that beat him up before he was rescued by the police.

SET ABLAZE

The truck, which was carrying a sealed container, was stoned and set ablaze by the angry mob forcing the police to use tear gas to disperse the rowdy crowd.

Fire brigade managed to put out the fire but the incident caused a major traffick snarl up that lasted for more than two hours.

Eldoret West police boss Samuel Mutunga confirming the incident saying the driver is being held at Baharini Police Post as investigations continue.

“We are holding the driver while we carry out more investigation. At the same time I want to urge members of the public to stop taking law into their hands and allow police to do their work,” he told the Nation.
