Chemists resist inspection by county officers
Owners of chemists in Mlango Kubwa on Wednesday resisted efforts by three county health inspectors to inspect their premises.
The proprietors argued that the inspection mandate lies with the Pharmacy and Poisons Board.
They further claimed that the health inspectors usually extort bribes from proprietors during such visits.
“They came here and I thought they were officers from Pharmacy Board. They told me that my stock has expired drugs, which I wasn’t sure of, so I gave them Sh1,500,” said Nancy, a proprietor.
“I have called an officer from the Pharmacy and Poison Board and he has just confirmed to me these people have no right to come here and inspect,” said Jacob Lesara, another proprietor.
According to the Public Health Act Chapter 242 and the Food, Drugs and Chemical Substances Act Chapter 254, the mandate of the Public health officer lies in sanitation and hygiene promotion.
The health inspectors left the area after an angry crowd confronted them.
