City businessman loses Sh1.5m to ‘policemen’ in carjacking incident

A businessman lost Sh1.5 million to carjackers posing as police officers in Karen, Nairobi as the cash was being transported to the bank.

Samuel Mugai Njuguna, who owns Sweetworld Supermarket in Bulbul, Ngong, said his accountant was transporting the money to a bank when the carjackers intercepted him in Karen.

The incident happened at 11.30 am on Monday.

According to police report, the accountant, David Karanja, left the supermarket together with a driver and were heading to Diamond Trust Bank in Karen.

A suspicious vehicle, a Land cruiser, kept trailing them and later overtook and blocked their car. Three men carrying pistols and pocket phones approached them and introduced themselves as police officers.

They were ordered out of the car and robbed of the cash and mobile phones. They were then shoved into the other car and driven away and abandoned in Ruiru. They were assisted by members of the public top contact the police.
