Police are holding a Nairobi business woman and a former Member of Parliament on suspicion of drug trafficking.

Joyce Akinyi and former Budalangi MP Raphael Wanjala were arrested in Isinya, Kajiado county, together with three other women and a driver.

They were arrested on Tuesday morning by the Special Crimes Unit and handed over to the Anti-Narcotics Unit later in the evening.

On Wednesday morning, the five were taken to Muthaiga Police station.

According to their Lawyer Cliff Ombeta, the two were returning from a business trip in Arusha, Tanzania where they were prospecting for maize flour in anticipation of the high demand during the Christmas festive season.

Nothing suspicious

The duo, according to their lawyer, were carrying three bundles of maize flour in the vehicle that were samples.

The police stopped them in Isinya area and frisked the vehicle but found nothing suspicious, said Mr Ombeta.

The flour was tested at the scene, at Nairobi area headquarters,  and samples taken to the government chemist for further testing, Mr Ombeta added.

The Three women arrested alongside Ms Akinyi and Mr Wanjala were taken to Mbagathi hospital on Wednesday reportedly to be tested on whether they had ingested drugs.

This was after police noticed one of them to be uncomfortable.
