British to unveil Mau Mau memorial to atone for atrocities

The British government will on Saturday unveil Mau Mau war memorial at Freedom corner, Uhuru Park, in Nairobi.

This is part of the out-of-court settlement offered by the British government to Mau Mau veterans.

This is besides the Sh2.7 billion that will be paid to 5, 228 claimants.

Making a landmark apology before Britain’s parliament in June 2013, Foreign Secretary William Hague expressed regret over “abhorrent violations of human dignity” that took place more than half a century ago.

“The British government recognises that Kenyans were subject to torture and other forms of ill-treatment at the hands of the colonial administration,” he said, adding it “sincerely regrets that these abuses took place and that they marred Kenya’s progress towards independence.”
