Bob Collymore tells Sauti Sol to dress better

Safaricom chief executive Bob Collymore has taken it upon himself to give fashion tips to members of Kenya’s most successful music band, Sauti Sol.

Mr Collymore, a Guyanan-born British executive given to wearing power suits, is a confessed Sauti Sol fan albeit with reservations on their stage costumes.

The boy band of four has been setting the trends across the continent with their explosive live performances and customised costumes that have won praise.

But My Collymore is not impressed.

Responding to a question on the kind of music he listens to, the Safaricom executive curtly added that he would feel better if the band’s members overhauled their wardrobe.

“My list would not be complete without Sauti Sol. These young men make me so proud. They take their craft seriously and they are making waves globally. I’d just be happier if they would buy new clothes that don’t have holes in them, and are not so tight,” Mr Collymore told Buzz magazine.

Sauti Sol are always making news for their hit songs, but once in a while, their fashion sense (or lack of it), has made headlines in blogs and social media platforms.

In 2016, the band set Twitter ablaze after posting photos of their costumes just before hitting the stage during a show in Mombasa.

The four members also posted a photo on Instagram in all white ensemble while spotting huge smiles. They had on sheer tops which many termed as ‘mosquito net’s, their trademark skinny trousers and other brow-creasing details.

In their defence, the band said apart from making music, theirs is to set trends that others follow.

“Kenyan artistes don’t give people something to talk about other than their music. We chose the outfits ourselves and if we don’t do this who will?” said Bien.

“Anybody who has ever been great has had these moments.

The band had the last laugh after one of their costumes received a mighty honour in the United Kingdom for their boundless sense of fashion, some months after they were put on the spot over their wardrobe.
