Why these Bible verses are so profound for many Kenyans
Kenyans have given the national debt burden debate a Biblical context, quoting verses in the Holy Book on the same.
This is after the country’s public debt crossed the Sh5 trillion mark for the first time.
The President Uhuru Kenyatta led administration has been accused of having a huge appetite for loans.
As the new 16 per cent VAT on petroleum products took effect on September 1, Kenyans blamed the government for its reckless borrowing.
Kenyans online are now making a Biblical reference to why borrowing is not good for the country.
In Deuteronomy, the Israelites were warned against borrowing from foreigners.
Deuteronomy 28:43-45 reads:
“The foreigners who reside among you will rise above you higher and higher, but you will sink lower and lower. They will lend to you, but you will not lend to them. They will be the head, but you will be the tail. All these curses will come on you. They will pursue you and overtake you until you are destroyed, because you did not obey the Lord your God and observe the commands and decrees he gave you.”
So now Kenyans want President Kenyatta to take heed of God’s message to the Israelites and desist from borrowing.
