Beer lovers’ uproar over bar closure during election period

The closure of bars and alcohol joints on the eve of Election Day tomorrow in Nyahururu town and its environs has caused uproar.

Authorities ordered the closure of all alcohol joints in the town from Monday morning till Tuesday 6pm, after everyone has participated in the voting exercise.

This, however, has not gone down well with a section of residents who have protested the move.

“This is unfair to us. Closing alcohol joints does not mean that everyone will go to vote. Secondly, the fact that one is a drunkard does not mean that he is unable to remember to make his decision on the ballot,” protested Joseph Murimi, a resident of Nyahururu town.

He lamented that those who love their bottle were being turned away from supermarkets in Nyahururu town where they had turned to in a bid to quench their thirst.

Traders who were interviewed also expressed mixed reactions.

“Life does not stop just because we have elections,” said Alice Njoki, a bar owner in Nyahururu town.

“After the election we will be expected to pay school fees for our children so I don’t see any sense of forcing us to close our business just because we are going for elections.”
