Babu Owino’s election victory upheld
The Supreme Court has upheld the election of Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino.
In its ruling on Friday, the Supreme Court ruled that the first time MP was validly elected.
Mr Owino’s (ODM) win was challenged by Francis Mureithi the Jubilee party candidate.
Mr Owino won the elections in the August 8, 2017 elections and Mr Mureithi then moved to court.
Chronology of court events:
January 13, 2018 – High Court orders vote recount.
March 2, 2018 – High Court nullifies Babu’s win citing election malpractice.
June 8, 2018 – Court of appeal overturns High Court ruling declares Babu the winner.
June 14, 2018 – Francis Mureithi appeals ruling at the Supreme Court.
October 3, 2018 – Supreme Court hears the appeal.
January 18, 2018 – Supreme Court uphold Babu’s win.
