Babu Owino sworn in as SONU Chairman…for the third time


Student leader Paul Ongili alias Babu Owino was on Saturday sworn in as the Student Organisation of Nairobi University Chairman for the third time since 2010.

Babu has been at the helm of students’ union in 2011, 2014 and now 2015.

He was re-elected on Friday on a joint ticket with his Vice-Chair Abby Gacheru.

Others elected on various top positions were Janganya Eric for Secretary General, Kate Kokumu for Secretary Finance and Okul Mark for the Organising Secretary position.

TOP LEADERSHIP

In the top leadership for the 2015 SONU parliament will also be Angel Mbuthia (Secretary Academic Affairs), Harold Mugozi (Catering and Accomodation), Scarlet Lupita Muhadia (Health and Environment) and Otieno Patroba Ogweno (Sports and Entertainment).

Others are Soke Dono Goske (Legal Affairs), Obonyo Milka Orare (Gender Affairs), Wilson Macharia (Special Needs) and several Halls Representatives, Faculty Representatives and Campus Representatives.

The list was published on Saturday on the University of Nairobi website undersigned by the SONU Electoral Commission Chairman Prof S. G Kiama on April 11, 2015.

Vice Chancellor Prof Peter Mbithi sent a congratulation message to elected officials, stating that they should serve to improve the institution.

“I urge the newly elected SONU Office to settle down and provide the much needed leadership amongst the student community, guided by University’s motto: Unitate et labore.”

Babu made history in 2011 when he became the first self-sponsored student to head SONU after David Osiany’s tenure.

After completing his term in April 2012 he paved way for DMK Kiogora who led the students that year. Zack Kinuthia won the April 2013 elections .

Babu made a comeback in 2013 to pursue his second degree and took up the leadership in the April 2014 elections.
