Babu Owino in court for charge of assaulting arch-rival Mike Jacobs

University of Nairobi student leader Paul Ongili, alias Babu Owino, on Thursday claimed that police have denied him witness statements in a case he is accused of assaulting his arch-rival Mike Jacobs.

The Students Organisation of Nairobi University (Sonu) chairman  told Kibera magistrate Derrick Kuto that his efforts to get the statements from the investigating officer had been futile.

He is facing a charge of causing grievous harm to Mike Jacobs at a petrol station in Nairobi. He is out on Sh200,000 bail.

He also wants a copy of Mike Jacob’s P3 form availed to him to prepare his defence.

He accused police of being reluctant to give him the documents despite a court order.

Prosecution however blamed Babu Owino of failing to comply with the court order that directed that he gets the documents in court.

Five witnesses, the prosecutor says, are set to testify including a police doctor.

The magistrate directed that Babu Owino be given the witness statements on Thursday.

“I do not want excuses. Make sure you get all documents today,” he said.

The case will be heard on September 22.
