9 arrested for forging passports

Police arrested nine people, among them a police officer and a Kenya Airways worker over suspicion of their involvement in fake visa and passport cartels.

They were arrested at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in the wake of threats that the Al Shabaab terror group was planning to launch new attacks in the county.

An Immigration Department worker is also being sought by the Special Crimes Prevention Unit (SCPU) after he escaped during the arrest.

The head of the SCPU, Noah Katumo claimed the nine had been involved in helping illegal immigrants into the country through the airport.

The arrested police Constable, Mustafa Maalim is attached to the JKIA’s Directorate of Criminal Investigations while the Kenya Airways staff, Paul Alalla works at the Kenya Airways check- in desk.

Mr Katumo said the Mr Maalim’s phone was seized as it contained vital information that may help catch other members of the cartel.

During the Wednesday evening arrests,  29 passports, 39 laptops and several mobile phones were taken as evidence.
