8 Things about Meru Governor Peter Munya


Meru governor Peter Munya was on Thursday elected chairman of the Council of Governors through consensus. Here are eight things to know about the new chairman:

1. He is 46-years-old and was born, raised and educated in Meru County.

2. He first chewed Miraa (Khat) in 1989 while preparing for his A-level exams in Meru School when a friend told him it would help with mental retention.

The result was however disastrous as he got too intoxicated after chewing overnight while revising and was unable to remember anything during the next day’s exam.

3. He holds a Bachelor of Law degree from the University of Nairobi and was a student leader at the institution serving as the chair of the Kenya Law Students Society in 1992 and 1993.

4. He wanted to get into politics immediately after graduating but lacked funds hence taught at the Kenya School of Monetary Studies, Kenya Institute of Professional Studies and Moi University while saving up to fund his political career.

5. He started doing community work and civil education around his constituency Tigania East with his savings as he prepared to get into politics.

6. He went into politics in 2002 where he was denied a NARC ticket even after winning the nominations and resulted to contesting in a Safina Party ticket that saw him become the constituency’s second legislator.

7. He successfully defended his parliamentary seat in the 2007 elections and was appointed the assistant minister for East Africa Community.

8. He vied for the Meru County Governorship in 2013, won the election but it was nullified by the Court of Appeal a year later, he however appeal and the Supreme Court reinstated him as governor.
