Over 5,000 married men and women ‘are violence victims’
At least 5,760 married men and women in Kenya experience physical violence every year, according to a report.
The Kenya Demographic Health Survey report showed that women were more susceptible to violence than men, with 5,658 and 4,695 women and men respectively suffering physical abuse annually.
Gender and Youth Affairs Cabinet Secretary Sicily Kariuki said gender-based violence was a violation of human rights that the society had normalised and concerted effort by all stakeholders was required to change the narrative.

“Dealing effectively with violence will require the input of both men and women, communities, organisations, institutions, and companies from all sectors, as well as all government bodies through an innovative, inclusive approach that both recognises men and boys as partners for women’s rights,” she said on Monday ahead of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women slated for November 25.
Ms Kariuki said the government was keen to explore private-public partnerships to communicate and support key messages that would stop violence.
She said this would be done within the HeForShe campaign launched by President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto, that is aimed at reaching out to men to achieve gender equality.
