February 27th, 2017 2 min read

About 30 chiefs in Laikipia are facing a sack threat for allegedly attending a meeting convened by former Mungiki leader Mr Maina Njenga who is eyeing the county senatorial seat.

The chiefs and their assistants who attended the meeting have since been given one week to show cause why they should not be disciplined or be relieved of their duties.

In a letter from the office of Interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho seen by Nation, the administrators have been accused of misconduct for ‘attending and taking part in political meetings and leading delegations from their area of jurisdiction to Mr Maina’s residence.’

The letter is dated Tuesday February 21 .

“It has been stated clear that all public servants should not take a side in the elections and should always support the government agenda,” the letter reads in part.

The letter further state; “You are hereby directed to show cause why you should not be disciplined or relieved off your duties for attending a political meeting hosted by an aspirant”.

DISCIPLINARY MEASURES

The administrators have been warned of unspecified disciplinary measures that if they do not give an explanation within the next one week.

The chiefs allegedly attended the meeting that was hosted by Mr Njenga at his Oroimuita home in Ol Jororok, Nyandarua County, a week ago where they reportedly feasted with him and were offered cash to support him.

Mr Njenga has already declared his candidature for the Laikipia county senatorial seat in the August polls to oust the incumbent Mr Godfrey Gitahi Kariuki.

The meeting was held outside Laikipia where Mr Njenga is contesting and the administrators were said to have been transported in buses to the venue.

However, contacted for comment, Nyahururu Deputy county commissioner Ms Flora Morwa, whose chiefs are said to be mostly affected, denied any knowledge of the letter.

“It is true that civil servants are not supposed to be partisan neither are they allowed take side in the elections campaign and should always support the government agenda,” the administrator said at her Nyahururu town office on Monday.

NOT AWARE

“However, I am on aware of any letter that was sent to the chiefs or their assistants”.

On the other hand Mr Njenga confirmed that it was true that he had hosted the chiefs at his home but not for political reasons.

The aspirant criticized the action terming it as unwise and arguing that they had done nothing wrong.

“The meeting is one of the many I hold with leaders and residents at public barazas to have a feel of challenges facing different areas and so there was nothing secretive about it that would warrant disciplinary action,” he told the Nation on phone.
