City Elections: Nasa supporters to Adopt-a-Bus-Station – PHOTOS

Nairobi County National Super Alliance (Nasa) leaders have launched Adopt-A-Bus-Station strategy aimed at stemming the exodus of voters who fear possible violence in the August 8 general elections.

The leaders, led by Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero together with Machakos County Senator Johnson Muthama, have assured their supporters that there would be no violence before, during and after the elections.

“We do not want you to go back home. Let us adopt bus stations and stop people from departing for their rural homes. There will be no violence as the elections will be peaceful and there is no need for people to go home,” said Dr Kidero.

He made the remarks at a meeting with representatives of the Luhya community at Nyayo stadium on Sunday.

Dr Kidero said he will ensure security for city residents during the elections and urged those sending their families to rural homes to stop panicking.

Senator Muthama warned that the exodus of voters from a Nasa stronghold would potentially give the Jubilee Party another five years.

SPOIL VOTES

“Let us not spoil our votes by going home. Let us ensure that we send this government home on August 8 but this will only be done if we all remain to vote en masse on the election day,” said Mr Muthama.

A spot check at the Machakos Country Bus terminus revealed a large group of travelers, mainly women and their children, boarding buses for their rural homes.

“I fear for violence erupting after the elections and I do not want to risk my life. We would have liked to wait and vote but the recent happenings in the country has made us fear for our security,” said Millicent Nyaboke.

Others, however, said that they were heading to their rural home to vote as they were registered at home.

There are claims that youths in bus termini have been asking travelers to reveal details of their polling stations  in a bid to help stem the ongoing tide.

“We ask for the adults travelling to give their registration details and only those registered in up country are allowed to board the buses,” said one youth who wanted to remain anonymous.
