Nairobi’s first alcoblow inspired business

While the return of the Alcoblow has proven a nightmare for drunk drivers, one man believes he has the answer for those who find themselves having taken one too many than they had intended.

Paul Mwangi runs Smart Fellas, a company that provides a driver to take inebriated motorists home in their own cars.

The company was formed slightly over a year ago but he says it is only in recent days that inquiries into their services have shot up.

One pays an annual sign-up fee of Sh2,000 and a Sh1,000 monthly subscription.

“When you call us, we charge you Sh150 per kilometre deducted from your monthly subscription. Once this is exhausted, then you’ll pay at the same rates,” he says.

He says that they have five cars and 10 drivers in teams of two strategically placed across the city. This sees the extra driver shadow the client’s car in the company car. On a regular day, the Smart Fellas’ drivers are located at Westlands, Hurlingham, Nairobi West, the Central Business District and Lang’ata Road.

Mr Mwangi adds that their subscription has shot up to 100 clients but they also cater to company events like parties or cocktails where alcohol is served.

With fines for those found driving over the allowed alcohol limit running into tens of thousands, the idea might just find some takers.

He says that the main advantage is the security offered by the shadow car while saving the owner a return trip to collect his car in the morning.
