Youths to receive kiosks

2,000 youths will receive small kiosks to sell their wares as the county seeks a solution to the hawker problem.

The kiosks, supplied by communications company Airtel, will be spread out across the city with the entrepreneurs receiving a Sh30,000 start-up loan from Rafiki microfinance.

Hawkers have severally clashed with the police and city inspectorate officers (askaris) over spaces to conduct businesses.

Deputy governor Jonathan Mueke who opened the project on Tuesday said they are refurbishing old markets and building new ones in Kasarani and Embakasi for hawkers.

“We are also professionalising the inspectorate team so that they be friends to the citizens and not go about harassing people,” he added.
