Nairobi millionaire seized in fake goods ring swoop

Police have unearthed a massive counterfeiting syndicate in Nairobi and seized fake goods worth millions of shillings.

A Nairobi businessman is being held after he allegedly offered police officers a Sh10 million bribe to avert arrest.

A 24-hour guard has been placed at the businessman’s palatial home in Loresho Estate to ensure the merchandise is not moved until investigations are complete.

THE MASTERMIND

“This operation was a result of valuable information from the public and has led to the arrest of a person we consider to be the mastermind of the racket. I also want to thank the officers for turning down a Sh10 million bribe,” said Inspector-General of Police Joseph Boinnet.

The operation, which continued yesterday, was led by Anti-Counterfeit Agency boss John Akoten.

Among the merchandise seized were light bulbs, detergents, cigarettes, electric cables and stationery.

Some packets of cigarettes were disguised as candy while others had Armed Forces Canteen Operation (AFCO) marks.

AFCO marks are only stamped on commodities sold at military barracks as they are tax exempted.
