Nairobi county plans crackdown on shisha joints
The Nairobi City County Alcoholic Drink Licensing Board will beginning next month start a crackdown on shisha joints in the city.
The board’s chairman Vincent Shimoli has said that all shisha outlets have been put on notice to either comply with the required conditions or risk closure.
Mr Shimoli also said the county has procured three motor vehicles which will be used to conduct impromptu inspections on such establishments in the city.
“As the County government we have decided to rein in on establishments that continue to encourage illicit and underage drinking in the city,” said Shimoli.
He was speaking when he visited Greater Life Concern Ministry, an organisation based in Pangani which continues to rescue, rehabilitate, empower recovering alcoholic and drug abusers.

He also cautioned parents who abdicate their roles and responsibilities of taking care of their children saying they are liable to prosecution for neglect as per the Children’s Act Cap 141.
“The county government will continue the clamp down on brothels disguised as massage parlors, which in fact promote underage sex, drug abuse as well as consumption of alcohol,” added Shimoli.
A comprehensive census of all liquor outlets will be established in order to capture the photo of the outlet, GPS location and necessary address and contacts. This will enable the board to deny or cancel lincenses for outlets that do not meet required conditions.
All night clubs and bars playing loud music will also be required to get clearance from the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) before they are considered for licensing.
