My ‘infertile’ husband duped me to bear child with another man, woman claims
A Nairobi woman has sensationally accused her former husband, a German, of duping her to get a child out of wedlock and then dumping her.
Ms Mary Njeri, 43, claims that the man was infertile and allowed her to get a child with another man, after which he became violent and finally ejected her from Germany in 2010 after a three-year stay in the European country.
Last week, she broke down at a public forum while trying to explain her frustration in getting divorce money from the German, whose identity we have withheld for legal reasons.
Addressing Deputy President William Ruto and Foreign Affairs Secretary Amina Mohammed, among other guests who had attended a conference for diaspora investors last Thursday, Ms Njeri burst into tears barely three sentences into her speech and was led out of the hall.
COMPENSATION
Speaking to Nairobi News later, the standard seven dropout said she wants compensation from the man —whom she claims to have wedded in 2005— for having “wasted her youth” while he knew he was infertile all that time.
“I demand compensation for all the years I stayed with him while he was unable to sire children,” she said.
The mother of three narrated how her husband, who she said she first met while selling clothes in Mombasa in 1999, asked her to sleep with another man outside their marriage and the physical abuse that followed after she fell pregnant.
“It reached a time when he was becoming too old to bear kids while I wanted children and he allowed me to find another man. So, I found someone who put me the family way; but that pregnancy was the beginning of the end of our marriage, which had often been turbulent,” she recalls.
“One day, I reported him to the authorities because he usually kept a knife under his pillow in what I surmised was an attempt to kill me during my pregnancy. But I was told that there is no offence in what he did as he had not harmed me.”
CITED INFIDELITY
After delivering her son, she said, a German court dissolved their marriage as her husband had cited infidelity.
The court, she added, also ordered that the ex-husband pays her some money. She does not know how much.
“He claimed to have built me a house in Kenya, which was a lie because we are homeless,” she said.
Ms Njeri, who hails from Naivasha in Nakuru County, now has a boy and a girl of mixed race: one aged five and another three. Besides, she has a 21-year-old son who lives in Mombasa.
After the break-up in 2010, she had a relationship with another German, which led to the birth of a girl in October 2012 while still working as a hospital cook.
“From then on, there were numerous threats on my life and I had to quit. I would find the door of my house ajar despite having closed it earlier. I then decided to leave,” she said.
She came back to Kenya in December 2013.
UPKEEP MONEY
Ms Njeri has since been visiting various government agencies in her push for upkeep money. One of them is the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR).
She had a document in which KNCHR referred her to the Women’s Rights Awareness Programme on February 5.
“Currently she is unable to feed her family and her efforts to seek help at the German Embassy on January 19, 2015 were unsuccessful as she states that she was forced out by the police. She even spent two nights outside the embassy and no one assisted,” the referral letter said.
She said they have been forced to live in borrowed space at an Adventist Church along Nairobi’s Valley Road.
Speaking to Nairobi News by phone Tuesday, she said her actions at the diaspora investors last Thursday has drawn the attention of the Kenyan ambassador to Germany, who has promised to follow up on the matter.
