Mwakwere throws bash for K’Ogalo in Dar

Kenya’s Ambassador to Tanzania Chirau Mwakwere has thanked Gor Mahia players and officials for “representing the country” well during the ongoing Cecafa Club Championship in Dar es Salaam

Mwakwere was addressing the team when they paid him a courtesy call at his residence on Wednesday morning, where he hosted them to a luncheon.

“I received several congratulatory calls after you beat  the home team (Yanga SC) in the opening match of the competition. You are representing the country well, firstly through your performances on the pitch, and then by showing an exemplary and disciplined attitude off the pitch. We are all very proud of this talented lot,” Mwakwere told the delegation.

The Kenyan Premier League champions beat Yanga SC 2-1 in their opening match before seeing off KMKM of Zanzibar 3-1 at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam.

LEAGUE WINNERS

“We thank you your Excellency for hosting us here and serving us with sumptuous Kenyan food. We are here to take the cup home, we are inviting you to the Stadium so that you can cheer us all through,” Gor Mahia team manager Jalawi Abondo said.

K’Ogalo will Sudanese club Al Khartoum in their next match on Friday. Al Khartoum is handled by former Ghana national team coach Kwesi Appiah and also has former Gor Mahia midfielder Anthony “Teddy” Akumu in its ranks.

The winner of the regional tournament that brings together leagues winners from the 11 member counties of the Council of East and Central Africa Football Association will pocket Sh 3 million in prize money.

The last time Gor Mahia won the regional title was in 1985 when they beat bitter rivals AFC Leopards 2-0 in Khartoum, Sudan.
