Mutua disowns letter on Machakos government shakeup

Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua on Friday asked the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to investigate and arrest people behind a forged letter purporting to announce a reorganization in the county government.

The letter, complete with the county government official letterhead, was circulated on WhatsApp, Twitter and Facebook.

The letter stated that Dr Mutua had reorganized his government by sacking four officers including the chief of staff Mr Mwengi Mutuse for alleged corruption.

According to the letter, others sacked were Mr Nimrod Mbai (Chief Officer, Decentralized Units), Kioko Luka (Executive Member, Lands) and Musyoka Kala (Chief officer Ministry of Lands).

“In line with the wishes and demands of the people of Machakos County, I have with immediate effect relieved the following officers off their duties… I cannot and will entertain looting of public accounts by officers in my government,” the letter read in part.

POLITICAL DETRACTORS

But Mutua, in a statement to newsrooms, termed the letter as a plot from political detractors.

“This is cheap propaganda and an act of desperation by our political detractors who are out to derail our development agenda,” Mutua said.

The embattled governor last year clashed with his deputy who survived impeachment after the senate rejected the motion that received overwhelming support at the county assembly.

Mutua has been accused severally of not paying his workers especially the contractors who have labored on the different development projects in the county.

Recently, a group of residents had staged protests against the county government and were arrested.
