Mutindwa church rebuilds despite ban

A tin-sheet church has begun reconstruction works near the Mutindwa rail crossing, a day after earthmovers pulled it down to clear railway reserve land.

The Eastleigh Mtindwa God’s Last Appeal Church was demolished alongside hundreds of other sheds in a dawn operation on Tuesday that was supervised by the police.

Workers hired by the church began digging fresh holes on Wednesday morning, as other straightened damaged iron sheets to be used to reconstruct the church.

According to James Ojwang’, a church leader, they had asked Kenya Railways for permission to rebuild again the church on the reserve.

He said their request was granted.

“It does not matter what happens at the railway corporation, but we spoke with them and they allowed us to construct the church once again. We hope by Saturday we would have finished because the congregation does not have anywhere to relocate to,” said Mr Ojwang’.

The church stands a few meters from the scene of last week’s tragic accident that involved a commuter train and an Umoinner bus. 12 people died from the accident.
