Muthurwa matatus to pay terminus fee

Muthurwa.

Matatus and buses will soon have to part with Sh100 to access Muthurwa Market terminus.

Installation of barriers at the market’s main entrance located near the City Stadium roundabout kicks off in a week’s time.

This follows approval of a proposal by the County government that a private developer takes up repair works at the market.

Devoted Indigenous Christian Organisation (DICO) will inject Sh230 million towards repair of the road leading to the terminus.

Construction will run for five months during which vehicles will use an alternative route to the market.

The organisation will inject another Sh177 million for installation of security lights and trash collection.

DICO chairman Michael Seme said the plan was aimed at improving accessibility and security in the area.

He said the Sh100 charge will apply to all vehicles getting into the market and the proceeds used in maintenance of the road.

Plan approved

“We hope this will be a sustainable way of getting funds to repair and maintain the road in future, “he said.

All the 13 saccos operating matatus at the terminus have approved the plan.

Initially, the barrier will be operated manually and then undergo automation with time.

“Motorists will receive a receipt once they make their payment,” said Mr Seme.

DICO is sponsored by well wishers from the US. Muthurwa Traders Chairman Nelson Githaiga welcomed the move.

“The good thing is that they have the support of matatu operators,” he said.
