Museveni cleared to contest Uganda’s presidential polls
Uganda President Yoweri Museveni has been cleared by his party to contest a fifth term in office in the country’s Presidential election set for next year.
The media in Uganda on Sunday reported that the 71 year old leader who has been in power since 1986, was cleared to vie for another five-year term by the National Resistance Movement’s (NRM) Electoral Commission.
In the 2005, Uganda abolished Presidential term limits, hence the sitting president can run for office for as long as he so wishes.

“The NRM is not a novice organization. It is an organization that has gone through a furnace of history of Uganda. We have been able to achieve a lot like liberating the country, minimum recovery programme of the country, economic transformation by sending many children to school and health, among others,” Museveni was quoted by the Ugandan media in the wake of the latest development.
Museveni is likely to face Amama Mbabazi and friend-turned-foe Kiiza Besigye at the polls.
There have been reports that the two opposition leaders, who were both at one time close allies of Museveni before falling from grace, are in talks to field one candidate against the incumbent.
At the same time, Museveni’s son in law Odrek Rwabwogo has lost to Brig Matato Kyaligonza in the race for NRM’s vice chairperson seat.
