MP’s vehicle seized in drug haul drama

A vehicle belonging to an MP was Wednesday impounded by police after it was found carrying 390 rolls of bhang and 24 sachets of heroine.

The drugs were reportedly being ferried to Lamu from Mombasa.

The truck belonging to Lamu West MP Julius Ndegwa was impounded at Witu Road block Wednesday morning.

“We have impounded a Mitsubishi Canter which had three people. The occupants were the driver, a loader and a passenger suspected to be the owner of the narcotics,” said a police officer, who requested not to be identified because he is not authorised to speak to the media.

The three are being held at the Mpeketoni Police Station as they await to be charged at a mobile court Thursday.

Mr Ndegwa confirmed that he was the owner of the vehicle and expressed shock that it was used to carry contraband goods.

“That is my vehicle and I am really shocked to hear that bhang and heroin was inside the vehicle. My vehicle carries only legal goods.

‘‘I congratulate the Lamu police for their efforts in ensuring that they fight the vice. I call on the prosecution to charge the three since they want to spoil my image,” said the MP.

He went on: “They should face the law. I don’t deal with such kind of people and I am not part of them.”
