MP vows to shoot down DCJ nominee’s name in parliament – VIDEO
Lady Justice Philomena Mbete Mwilu’s nomination for the position of Deputy Chief Justice has been strongly opposed by a Member of Parliament who has vowed to shoot down the name when it comes to parliament for vetting.
Kandara MP Alice Wahome says Justice Mwilu has not been a good champion of women affairs whenever she handles their matters from the bench.
The MP further says the appellate Judge may be the Judicial Service Commission’s pick for DCJ, but will need to change her attitude towards women if she is to get her support.
“I think most of the names that were given to Judicial Service Commission for interviews were more qualified and have championed women affairs better than Justice Mwilu and JSC should have reconsidered their choice. I’m asking Justice Mwilu to change her attitude towards women,” Hon Wahome said.
SUPPORT FOR POLYGAMY
Justice Mwilu is a Court of Appeal judge. She has served in the Judiciary for 32 years.
Justice Mwilu came into the limelight during her interview by the JSC, after she said she supported polygamy “as long as there is peace in the family”.
She also said that if appointed she would ask to head the anti-corruption docket, saying she was best suited to fight the vice.
“I will set systems in place, strengthen them and also set others to prevent corruption,” she said.
At the same time, she asked the JSC to increase the number of women in the Supreme Court to three.
Her name is yet to be approved by President Uhuru Kenyatta who will then forward it to parliament for vetting before can become the next DCJ of Kenya.
