Here is MP Shah’s explanation to patient’s Sh860k bill in 12 hours

MP Shah Hospital has sought to explain how a patient, who died 12 hours after admission at the facility, incurred a staggering bill of Sh860,000.

Following public outcry, the hospital has issued a statement to explain the huge bill slapped on the next of kin of the deceased.

The deceased, Matilda Anyango, was rushed to the hospital after being stabbed by thugs in Kangemi Slums, Nairobi, on the night of April 11 but she succumbed to her wounds 12 hours later.

Anyango was taken to the hospital at about 9.30pm, underwent emergency  surgery but died the following day at 10am.

The hospital then gave her family a bill of Sh858,355 and have subsequently detained the body until the full payment is settled.

OUTRAGE

The incident has since attracted outrage on social media, with many questioning the huge bill over the short period of time.

But in its defence the hospital has said medical bills are not dictated only by the duration of stay in the hospital, but also by the extent and complexity of the medical procedures accorded to the patient.

The hospital also detailed a chronology of the treatment that the patient received upon admission until she succumbed to her injuries.

“The patient was brought in on the night of 11th April 2018 shortly before midnight after sustaining injuries which led to massive blood loss. As with protocol, in which every patient has the right to emergency treatment and due to her critical condition, she underwent emergency surgery by a multi-disciplinary team of surgeons. The patient was in critical state and needed life support in our Intensive Care Unit,” read part of statement from the hospital.

The hospital added that despite their best possible medical and surgical effort the patient succumbed to her injuries on 12/4/2018, stating they are deeply saddened by the patient’s demise.
