MP charged with assaulting his celebrity girlfriend

Mwingi Central MP Gideon Mulyungi was on Friday morning arraigned at a court in Ngong town and charged with assaulting his girlfriend Doreen Gatwiri.

His lawyer Makueni MP Daniel Maanzo told the Daily Nation that his client was summoned by Hardy Police Station Karen Divisional Criminal Investigation Officer (DCIO) Suiyanka Cunningham to go and record a statement.

“We went to the police station at around 3pm after my client was summoned, but he was denied police bond and he spent the night in the cells,” said Maanzo.

On Friday morning, the MP was taken to Ngong Law Courts to answer to the charges of assaulting his girlfriend.

He appeared before Chief Magistrate Stephen Mbugi. The charge stated that on February 26 in Lang’ata he assaulted his girlfriend causing her grievous bodily harm.

He denied the charge and was released on a Sh20,000 cash bail with a surety of similar amount.

RECONCILIATION

His lawyer however told the court that the two are in negotiations for reconciliation. The magistrate set a pre-trial conference for 9 April.

Gatwiri’s lawyer Cliff Ombeta however told Daily Nation that the two are not holding any reconciliation talks.

“There is nothing like that. This man has been beating her so badly that she has had to miss duties because of the serious wounds that he leaves her with,” said Mr Ombeta.

He added that his client is doing well and staying at a friend’s house which he could not disclose because the legislature has been looking for her.

Gatwiri is a former anchor at Ebru TV.

She had posted on social media that her life was in danger after she accused the MP of assaulting her. She claimed the MP had attacked her on February 26 at night in their home in Karen, Nairobi.

“Guys My life is in danger. This evening at about 9.50pm my husband (redacted) assaulted (sic) me at our Karen Home over domestic quarrel and I sustained head injuries at the back of my ear resulting to my left ear going numb and serious headache and my right knee. I managed to report the matter at Hardy Police Station.

‘THREATENED ME’

She added; “I fear for my life because he always threatened me that I really don’t know who he is. One time he told me to ask around who “(redacted) is.”

She said this was not the first time he has assaulted her.

“This assault is not the first or second time. I did it to protect my home and his anger condition but enough is enough. His anger issue is always getting out of hand making me a target,” she added.

She also claims that he has also previously assaulted their house girl by slapping her and using his walking stick on her.

“He also slapped our chef (redacted) who took the matter to the police,” she went on.

She said she had reported the matter at Hardy Police Station and later went to hospital in Parklands “in fear of neighboring hospitals that he could be tracking my moves to attack me again or stop me from taking action”.

The former news anchor at Ebru TV later sought refuge at a friend’s house in Kileleshwa.
